There was a time when I believed leadership had a strict dress code. I imagined leaders wearing high heels, buttoned-up jackets, exuding confident posture, and delivering perfectly rehearsed speeches. If I dressed the part, I would naturally feel the part. However, as I pursued promotions and often found myself running late, I realized something crucial: authentic leadership doesn’t care about the shoes you wear.

Some of my most meaningful leadership moments have occurred when I felt the least put together. I’ve led from behind a screen in a hoodie (or pajamas), from a clinic hallway with aching feet and a coffee stain on my badge, and even in sneakers. What truly mattered wasn’t my outfit; it was my intention.

We often spend too much time trying to conform to a version of leadership that appears polished on the outside. But leadership isn’t a performance; it’s a practice. When we let go of the idealized version of ourselves, we create space for the authentic version we already are. That’s when people begin to trust us. They don’t trust us because we’re polished; they trust us because we’re real.

I’ve learned that being authentic creates a greater impact than being impressive. Leading in flats is my metaphor for choosing grounded over glamorous. I’ll take stability over stilettos any day. Comfort doesn’t mean complacency; it means confidence enough to be fully present, even when things aren’t perfect.

The truth is, I still enjoy wearing heels and dressing up when it feels right. However, I no longer confuse image with influence. What I’ve discovered is that the most effective leaders I know aren’t the ones who walk in perfectly; they’re the ones who walk in honestly. And if that means wearing flats, scrubs, or yesterday’s mascara, so be it.

Every day, we have the opportunity to choose how we lead. While the shoes we wear may change, the goal remains the same: show up with integrity, lead with heart, and remember that presence always matters more than polish.

Leadership isn’t about your physical appearance; it’s about your values. Embrace your authenticity, wear comfortable clothing, and continue to lead anew.
